Similar to when we moved to Australia in 2006, we arrived in San Diego with almost nothing. Luckily this time we had some experience in the “need to buy everything for a house” category. In the past two weeks we spent a lot of time at Ikea and Target and, therefore, haven’t explored any of our new city. We’re hoping to start checking out the sites of SD soon, but for now we’re happy to be settled and have a place to call home for the first time in four months. Because Tony like to keep track of these types of things, here is a great statistic -- when our mattress arrived a week ago, it was the 50th bed we had slept on since April 7th. It felt good to unpack our bags after four months and place our clothes in a dresser drawer. We had some amazing adventures, met some interesting and beautiful people and saw some spectacular sites over the past 4 months, but I think we’re pretty ready to be settled for a bit. While our stories may no longer be as entertaining or exotic as tales from our travels, we will try to keep the blog updated and keep people entertained.
For now, some things we have noticed about San Diego: there is no lack of sun, surf, scenery, traffic and people-watching opportunities. The beaches are beautiful; the weather is beautiful; and the people are beautiful. People love to be outside and everyone seems to be exercising all the time; it makes you feel bad if you don’t! The highways are big out here –7 lanes on each side of the road. We have to get used to getting across 5 lanes to get to an exit. We also notice that drivers here are pretty bad, but maybe drivers everywhere are bad and we just notice it more here.
This past Saturday we decided not to do anymore house stuff and instead went for our first hike in the area. We drove up to Poway lake and climbed up to Mt Woodsen –about 8miles roundtrip. It was a nice hike but not as spectacular as the reviews seemed to have suggested. See the linked pictures. We might have to drive a bit further to get to some better hikes but it was a good chance to see the area and stretch our legs. On Sunday we spent some time in La Jolla watching the seals swim around the cove and the surfers catch some waves at Wind and Sea beach; just another day in beautiful Southern Cali.
Check back now and then and we’ll try to keep up with some interesting stories and write about what catches our attention.
